Andrew Wappat

Executive Principal, Outwood Academy Bydales, Outwood Academy Redcar

I began my career in Middlesbrough as a Chemistry teacher in 1994, later becoming a Head of Chemistry, and then a Head of KS4 Science. Later I also picked up responsibility for raising boys' achievement, before becoming Head of Science in 2001. During this time I benefited from the inspirational leadership of the then headteacher of my school, Sir John Rowling, who was knighted for his services to education in 2003. I joined the Senior Leadership Team at Nunthorpe School as a Assistant Headteacher in 2004, before becoming the Deputy Headteacher at Scalby School in Scarborough in 2008. With the support of Outwood Grange that school went from 'special measures' to 'good' in sixteen months. I became an SLE with the Outwood Teaching School Alliance in 2012, and was appointed as an Associate Principal with the Outwood Grange Academies Trust (OGAT) in 2013. Prior to becoming Principal at Bydales, I was Associate Principal at Outwood Academy Acklam in Middlesbrough, following it joining the Family of Schools in 2013. Since conversion, the results have rose by 22% in two years, and the school was judged 'good with outstanding leadership' in 2015. It is now the top performing school in the whole North East for the progress students make from primary school.

I have been Principal at Bydales since July 2014, and Executive Principal since November 2015, taking on the support of the Principal at Outwood Academy Ripon. Since September 2016 I have been supporting the Principal at Redcar Academy, now Outwood Academy Redcar as Executive Principal whilst remaining Principal at Outwood Academy Bydales. It was fantastic to learn recently that both academies are now the top performing schools in Redcar & Cleveland for progress, based on the 2017 GCSE results. Redcar is also 8th in the Tees Valley, and 22nd in the North East (out of 149 schools) for progress made by students from primary school, with Bydales second and Outwood Acklam first. Bydales is 1st in the North East for 9-5 grades in both English & maths.

It is a privilege to lead our amazing academies, working as I am with such a committed, friendly and positive students, staff and local communities.
